Responding to Oppression Without Violence

This summer we witnessed a series of disruption demonstrations in the
United States by ‘Black Lives Matter’.  Were these effective non-violent
direct actions? Some felt they were; others thought they were hostile.
These actions are seldom spontaneous and require great planning.  Creating
effective non-violent direct actions will be the major objective of a
workshop sponsored by the Center for Global Justice and facilitated by Dr.
Victor Bremson.

Protesters have some difficult realities to face.  Protests against the
‘realpolitik’ in both the United States and Mexico is very difficult.  The
media has been fragmented and regularly reports and spins stories to fit
its audiences. The governments in both countries use extra judicial means
to control its population.  It is risky for the individual to take a

The Direct Action workshop will examine historical examples of effective
protests in the United States and other places around the world, including
here in Mexico.  It is designed to help the participants create effective
direct actions in their own communities.    Here are a few comments from
people who took the workshop last year.

From Marsha Usiskin of Toronto:
“I attended your last class on non-violent direct action and thoroughly
enjoyed it...your presentation was well done...clips; videos etc...along
with your own talk. The class was enthusiastic  and participated in
discussion...I brought some of the ideas raised in your class back home to
Toronto where I shared them with my group of friends who are also
interested in that philosophy.....even enjoyed that we all went to a
pertinent movie together.”

From Dr. William Wilen of Kent University:
“Based on the workshop, Kathy and I put together a panel discussion, “How
Global Warming Affects Us & What We Can Do to Save Ourselves,” that was
sponsored by the UU Church here in Kent and the Kent Environmental Council
and held a month ago. I got 3 Kent State science area professors and
another home climate activist who were extremely knowledgeable and
interesting about the causes of, and potential solutions to climate
change. We had about 50 in attendance and our presentations were received
very well.”

Some of the 20th century’s most inspiring and least known stories are
about where nonviolent popular power overcame oppression and authoritarian
rule.  The documentary A Force More Powerful tells some of those stories
in a two part film being presented by the Center for Global Justice.  It
recounts the story of how Gandhi’s nonviolent weapons helped win
independence for India; how Black college students in Nashville, Tennessee
used disciplined nonviolent direct action to desegregate downtown lunch
counters.  Nonviolent civil disobedience was also used against apartheid
in South Africa and against the German occupation of Denmark in the
1940’s.  Polish workers in Solidarity and Chilean workers also were
successful in making significant social change through nonviolent
struggles.  These struggles give proof to the often heard slogan “The
People United Will Never Be Defeated.”  It just sometimes takes a little

Despite recent setbacks, China is still planning to invest as much as the
equivalent of a half-trillion US dollars in ports, railways and roads in
Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, Cuba, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Venezuela...and
elsewhere in Latin America.  Such China-funded development includes all
major ports on the West Coast of Mexico, a massive canal across Nicaragua,
construction of which has begun, and a multi-track railway line linking
the Pacific coast of Peru across the Andes to the Atlantic coast of

Little known to people in the three NAFTA countries has been recent
expansions of North American rail networks to link U.S. shippers, across
borders, with ports in Mexico and Canada.  One of these major railways
runs right through San Miguel de Allende.  Its future traffic will impact
all of us.

The stated reason for “outsourcing” port facilities is that expansion of
such major U.S. ports as Long Beach, Oakland, Portland, and Seattle,
surrounded by dense urban areas, is difficult.  The unstated reason is
that unionized U.S. West Coast dockworkers are costly: using railways to
reach expanded ports outside the U.S.A. will both reduce port costs and
help to break the power of the strongest U.S. unions.  In this process the
port of Michoacan’s Lazaro Cardenas will be among those vastly expanded
and another huge port will be added in Baja California, all primarily
serving the trade of...guess where with guess where?

Dr. David Stea will give an illustrated presentation examining the history
of infrastructure projects and the potential impacts of the massive
involvement of Chinese sociocapitalist enterprises in the Western
Hemisphere, even upon San Miguel de Allende.  Dr. Stea, Distinguished
Professor Emeritus of UNAM, is an engineer and environmental psychologist
now resident in San Miguel.  He has lectured, taught and consulted on
urban and regional planning issues in a dozen countries throughout the

Transportation has no effect on overall environment, which is driven fundamentally by sun controlled activity, ocean streams and water vapor. The fundamental air effect of transport, the urban warmth island effect, is made when clearing lanes.
